Everything is going to change
Everything you know today is about to change. That is everything! No longer can anyone contemplate a life without change. This will affect you, your career, your children and the organisation you work for.
The second certainty… this change is going to hit you harder than you can currently comprehend and it’s coming faster than any change in our history. Are you ready? What are you doing to get ready? Is your organisation ready?
Keeping up with the changes
Historically, change has been slow. The world evolved and, over a generation, people were impacted but had time to evolve with the change. Children could see the change coming and its impact on their parents and adjust to ensure their own success. As a result of this, we have seen recent generations where the children have been more prosperous and healthy than their parents. But even this is about to change. It’s arguable how quickly the change will impact us, but there are numerous examples of change in our society today:
- Current grandparents didn’t have any technology, other than perhaps a colour TV connected to a VCR. Current children have access to a fantastic array of technology and are using this technology to be connected 24/7, to communicate and socialise. In the middle, the parents, who are struggling to keep up with their children, are helping their parents to get online. This significant change has already occurred within one generation – and it’s everywhere, all around us.
- Fast-food restaurants are now replacing staff with automation – automation that can interact with people, take orders for food and make payment. This immediately reduces the number of entry-level jobs. These same fast-food restaurants are now experimenting with automation that will prepare, cook and serve the food.
- ‘Google it’ – any information is available to everyone all the time. If you need to know where you are, you can ask Google. Need information for a school essay, ask Google. There are features within Google that will even filter the information and provide only the academic results. How many people reading this remember all the information in the world being restricted to a set of Encyclopaedia Britannica?
Leading the way
I focus on the technologies that will impact the way that Assurity provides services to the market. We continue to lead the market through asking questions and seeking out new ways of delivering excellence to remain relevant.
In my role, I’m interested in the development of products and technologies that will improve the delivery time, but also the quality, usability, coverage, governance, metrics and reporting. I believe that our industry (creation of new software/tests software, ensuring adherence to standards and polices) will be hit by change just like the fast-food industry or the automotive industry before it. Just because we are technology professionals, white collar or knowledge workers doesn’t make us immune or safe in our world. The change that I’m referring to will impact everyone, every business.
Consider the humble car. Largely created (as we know them today) by Henry Ford who once said, “If I’d asked what they wanted, they would have said faster horses”.
The car is hugely complex and driving a car from Wellington to Auckland or through the rush hour traffic requires a huge amount of intelligence using visual and audio queues – hopefully not too much touch or taste. Even if we could ask a person about autonomous vehicles 10 years ago, they would have thought it impossible. If we returned to the 1970’s, autonomous vehicles would have been truly unthinkable. And yet, they exist today. Let’s call these autonomous vehicles ‘autos’. Everything is going to change. Some likely impacts of autos:
1. Our people will no longer require a driver’s licence. Why would you need a driver’s licence when the car drives itself? Downstream impacts:
- Driving instructors
- Licence issuing authorities
2. The taxi industry will disappear. Why would anyone require a taxi when they can call up an auto when required? Downstream impacts:
- Taxi firms and private hire services
- Licencing and policing
3. Private ownership of a motor vehicle will disappear. Autos will be available anytime and collect and deliver you to your destination. Why would you need to own an auto when they are constantly available for use? Downstream impacts:
- Panel repair
- Garages in homes
- Car washing, maintenance
4. Autos don’t crash. Autos will be able to communicate with other autos, thereby completely avoiding accidents. This will be immediately positive for most people, through savings in injury or death. Downstream impacts:
- Accident and medical
- Panel repair
- Collision services
- Road maintenance
The depth of impact to many industries as a result of autos is extensive. Even if 50% of the impact occurs, it will result in a dramatic change. Also, the pace of change is uncertain but, for example, autos are already operating as taxis in a number of cities right now. Don’t believe for a moment that the technological advances that have made autos possible will not equally impact the world we live and work in. If we can create an autonomous vehicle that can move us around in complete safely in any traffic environment, we can automate bots to design, build and test software.
Within our industry – the technology sector – we could consider ourselves to be immune to this change. That everything in the future will require people to code, develop and test. To the most part, this assumption will be correct. But we already have autonomous code development, story writing for newspapers, blogs and wiki’s. We should not be complacent. Change is about to impact our sector. We need to be ready.
We are working with our clients to self-disrupt, introduce better ways of doing and being. The use of smarter products and approaches. Most of the discussions that I now have with clients evolve around DevOps, Agile and Test Automation (DATA). Currently, I see organisations wanting to use Agile coupled with DevOps to increase the velocity of change, both supported by automation. The technology driving the automation of DevOps and Agile is completely new.
In many cases, our clients are using point solutions, focusing on a variety of technologies, solving individual needs. For our enterprise clients, it’s no longer possible to drive significant change or increases in change volumes without the support of technology.
