Spotlight on Marcella Koopman
Marcella Koopman joins Assurity’s Auckland branch as a Senior Agile Consultant. Her passion is in education and helping teams achieve the impossible. We asked Marcella about her background and what drives her both in work and out...
What's your background?
Let's start with my personal background… I’m Dutch! That said, my career background started in IT as a website developer, but after four months I switched to team lead. Then I had a lot of different roles – Scrum Master, project manager, delivery manager, service manager and Product Owner. I set up a Centre of Excellence with six IT teams and introduced them to Scrum.
After working on the development side of business, I thought it was time for the business side. I took on the role of sales manager which I liked, but I missed the coaching part. So I became an Agile coach and trainer and still love it.
Why did you join Assurity?
From the moment I saw the Assurity website, I felt it was a company focused on people. That was really important for me as I was about to leave everything behind in the Netherlands. The first meeting with Hannah confirmed it; we had a really cool conversation and all subsequent meetings got me more and more excited about joining Assurity. I couldn’t have been happier when I was offered the job.
What’s your role at Assurity?
I love to help people. I love it when people say “I can’t do it” or if someone tells me “you can’t do it” (even better). Nothing is impossible; if you want it, you can make it happen. As a Senior Agile Consultant, I help our customers with their Agile transformations – as a coach, but also as a trainer. I want New Zealand to know Assurity, what awesome stuff we do and to see how Agile a company can be.
What do few people know about you?
Few people know that I’m deaf in one ear (my right one). I do have a hearing aid but I tend not to use it a lot.
What makes you happy?
A lot of things! One of the reasons I came to New Zealand is that I like to hike and spend time in nature. I love being on a boat and just floating over the water, the wind in my hair, that kind of stuff. Okay, ideally to spot whales, dolphins or anything ocean-related. Eating makes me really happy too… I like to eat and hang out with friends.
What's your favourite place and why?
Last year, I went to Belgrade, Serbia and I loved it! Zagreb in Croatia as well. Really laidback places where you can get really good food. And I’ve been to Moke Lake, near Queenstown. It’s the most gorgeous place to camp!
What's your go-to song on Spotify?
I love jazz, soul and blues music mixed with a little bit of rock or country. I listen a lot to St. Paul and the Broken Bones, The Teskey Brothers and Ganstagrass. I’m a big fan of Mark Knopfler and Fleetwood Mac! But also more recent music like Jacob Banks, Maitre Gims and Aloe Blacc.
